Today we were up at 4:15 am to pack up and walk to the pier to catch the 6 am ferry. We were down at the pier by 5:30 am and there was already a small lineup to the ticket counter. Since we had pre-purchased our ticket from Som the lady at the hotel, we got tickets and were on our way out to the pier where the high speed catamaran ferry was waiting. We boarded and took our bags to the front of the main deck where the luggage was stacked. The whole front of the ferry was full of backpacks and suitcases. The stack was so high they obscured the viewing screen at the front of the boat. Thankfully our two small suitcases could be stacked off to the side so when we arrived in Ko Samui it was easy to grab our bags. The high speed ferry travels at a fast 50 Kmh. Thankfully it was smooth sailing not like the night of the storm! We heard countless horror stories of people being sick the night of the storm, people crying and wanting it to end! A two hour ferry trip being sick would put you off of sailing for good! That was the last ferry trip for a day or so until the ocean wasn’t so rough.
Our ticket included transportation to the airport. It was a 12 passenger van and we were one of a convoy making our way from the pier to airport! The driving in Samui is dangerous and aggressive! We actually never had seat belts which was not reassuring as we are weaving in and out of traffic dodging motor bikes, cars and ummm gravel trucks! The airport is pretty cool, it’s got tons of shops, walkways surrounded by shrubs and flowers. We are flying on Bangkok air “Asia’s Boutique Airline”
We are sitting in the lounge on the side of the runway in open air shaded by a huge gazebo style roof. When a plane fly by taking off or landing it is a bit loud for a few seconds. Due to our ferry schedule we ended up at the airport with 3 hours to spare which was enough time to have a meagre snack in a cafe at a very healthy price. When we got to the boarding gate we found some free drinks, muffins, juice and coffee.
Our flight is on time so we should depart in 2 hours for Krabi. We are staying in the Maritime Resort Hotel in Krabi. It looks nice on the Internet, they have a pool which we may be using to cool off on arrival. Tomorrow we take a van to the Hat Yai pier in Trang province and then a ferry to the tiny island of Koh Lipe.
For now we sit and wait….
